Wine Spa Travel - Soaking in Vino Japan

Wine Spa Travel - Soaking in Vino JapanNow, Wine spa is popular in Japan, which means the corks come out of the world's most overrated vino today. Beaujolais Nouveau has already touched down in Japan, where true wine fans aren't just drinking the stuff, their swimming in it.

The Yunessun Spa Resort Hotel in Hakone is one of many hot springs-fed resorts in Kanagawa. Its aptly named wine spa is stocked with Beaujolais, and the on-duty sommelier would be happy refill your glass. (Please don't drink directly from the pool.) If you're teetotaling on your Japan trip, Yunessun also offers a coffee spa and a green tea bath.

And it seems those non-alcoholic options are a good hedge. Though Japan consumes a quarter of the world's Nouveau, taste for the seasonal wine is dwindling. In ever trendy Japan, not even a pool full of booze can't catch on for long.

The Lost Dreams of Love Hotels in Japan

Love hotels in Japan, nowadays they're calling them "fashion hotels," they're calling them "boutique hotels." What times are these we're living in?

We Japanese are generally reputed to be "good at copying," yet for some reason we seem to exercise the highest level of erotic originality in the world. From sopu "soaplands" (bathhouses) and imekura "image clubs" (costume role-playing) and deriheru "delivery health" (call-a-massage), mainstays of the sex-hire industry, to hi-tech adult toys, to lust-and-violence manga comics and pick-a-girl fuzoku magazines, the Japanese creative spirit would seem to be fixated on things erotic. And of course, there's interior design's erotic "true north", the love hotel.

Love Hotel in JapanHotels designed for sex are to be found all over the world, not just Japan. That much said, far a field from your basic room for a fast fuck, where else in all the world would you find places that let you watch your partner bathe in a clear bathtub while you laze on the revolving circular bed, or try out that "see-saw with so many different uses." The fundamental principle here being, lest we forget, while that which perfectly fulfills the required function is craft that which exceeds requirements and achieves the realm of useless unmeaning is art.

Bed Love Hotel in JapanBeds that revolve or vibrate, or see-through partitions between bed and bath areas, or "mirrored rooms" with mirrors larger than 1 square-meter--that is, any and all places equipped with "facilities not required for the basic purposes of guest lodging fall under the rubric of sex-related businesses, not hotels and inns.

This "sex-related" label means no operating outside of areas that are specifically zoned for sex-related businesses. In Tokyo, for instance, that limits things to four tiny neighborhoods. In other words, it is now illegal to run a "Japan hotel equipped with love hotel-like facilities" anywhere outside these districts. Moreover, as a sex-related business there are periodic health checks, supervision by the local public security committee, and no refusing access to the police. Not surprisingly, hotel managements now tend to tone down love hotel-like interiors in order to make the grade for the ordinary guest-lodging category.

Outside Love Hotel in JapanOutside the above sex-business zones there are still love Japan Hotels that keep their old-time fancy interiors. But should they remodel even just once, their permits would be on the line. They'd have no choice but to wallpaper over the mirrors, take out the revolving beds, and make the place look like an ordinary city hotel. Conversely, as anyone who's ever been to one knows, today's love hotels now have "front desks," despite the fact that room selection is usually done from photo panels and payment is fully automatic. It's just that getting around the New Act demands adding such non-essential features, and even hotel restaurants too. Ridiculous.

Japanese Plum Early Start to Spring

Cherry BlossomsThe Japanese plum or ume (sometimes referred to as Japanese apricot) has played an important role in Japanese culture for many centuries. It was originally introduced from China.

The plum is associated with the start of spring, because plum blossoms are some of the first blossoms to open during the year. In the Tokyo area, they typically flower in February and March. The event is celebrated with plum festivals (ume matsuri) in public parks, shrines and temples across the country.

Like cherry trees, plum trees come in many varieties, many of which were cultivated by humans over the centuries. Most plum blossoms have five petals and range in color from white to dark pink. Some varieties with more than five petals (yae-ume) and weeping branches (shidare-ume) have also been cultivated. Unlike cherry blossoms (Sakura), plum blossoms have a strong fragrance.

The most popular processed form is the umeboshi, a sour, pickled plum, which is usually enjoyed with cooked rice. The umeboshi has one of the most typical Japanese flavors. Umeshu, a sweet alcoholic beverage made of plums, is also very popular.

Some popular plum spots in and around Tokyo

Cherry BlossomsKairakuen (Ibaraki Prefecture): Mito Station, JR Joban Line Ranked as one of Japan's three finest landscape gardens, Kairakuen features over 3000 plum trees of 100 varieties. A plum festival is held annually from February 20 to March 31.

Koishikawa Korakuen (Tokyo): Korakuen Station, Marunouchi Subway Line A beautiful Japanese landscape garden in central Tokyo with a few dozen plum trees. A ume matsuri is held from February 10 to March 4, 2007

Hanegi Park (Tokyo): Umegaoka Station, Odakyu Line

Spa Chocolate Valentine's Bath in Japan

Spa Chocolate Valentine's BathA Japanese spa is offering the perfect aphrodisiac for Valentine's Day chocolate baths. Those who just can't get enough of the sweet stuff can immerse themselves in water mixed with cacao and fragrant bath powders. Twice a day, staff pour creamy chocolate over the bathers, who smear it over their bodies or lick it off.

This bath is my Valentines Day gift for him this year, said Mayumi Uekusa, who traveled more than two hours with her boyfriend to the Yunessun spa in Hakone, north of Tokyo, to soak in a mixture of warm water, cacao and aromatic bath powders.

"Life ain't as sweet as this bath, darling," quipped her boyfriend Yuichi Omata. Japanese women have long been the ones to give their guys gifts on Valentine's Day.

While couples shared romance in the bath, families with grandmothers and babies in tow also spread chocolate over their faces and bodies. Everybody wore a bathing suit.

Confectioner Morozoff is widely credited with introducing Valentine's Day to the country in a 1936 advertisement for chocolates. Some two decades later, Mary Chocolate used Valentine's Day as a sales promotion in what is generally seen as the first such commercial endeavour.

Now in Japan, as in many countries, chocolate and romance go hand in hand and for many lovers, Valentine's Day just wouldn't be the same without these sweet treats.

The Aztecs believed chocolate was an aphrodisiac that invigorated men and made women less inhibited, and when it came to Europe, it quickly became the perfect gift to inspire lust.

Modern research shows that chocolate helps release "feel good" hormones in the body, which trigger reactions that mimic the feelings associated with being in love.

The Japanese spa resort offers dozens of other "amusement" baths, including a wine bath, a coffee bath, and a sake bath. In the past, it has even offered a curry dip. A ticket that allows access to all these baths costs about 3,500 yen, or $29.

A Famous Spa Town of Kusatsu Hot Spring in Japan

Kusatsu Hot SpringPeople of Kusatsu in Gunma Prefecture are proud to have one of the most prolific outpourings of hot water of all hot springs in Japan. Spa water gushes up from a number of wells in the town and the combined output for the whole town is about 37,000 liters (9,772 gallons) per minute. The springs produce sulfurous spa waters with high acidity that are said to be effective against neuralgia and skin diseases.

Records show that men in power visited the town to bathe in the hot waters in as early as the 13th century, and that the spa itself was already well-known at that time. Today the town is part of the Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park and is constantly busy with many visitors. People come in the summer to escape the heat, in the fall for the autumn leaves, and in the winter for the skiing.

While Kusatsu is a popular tourist destination, the bountiful spa water is also supplied to the private homes of the town's residents, making use of the resource, and the hot spring waters are also piped under the major roads to melt the settling snow in winter.
